Background
Craftsman Cliff Coffee Roasters is a boutique, small-business coffee roaster in Connecticut. As the company began to scale up, their homespun packaging design was in need of an update. They wanted their coffee bean bags to portray quality and elegance, while paying homage to the country of the coffee's origin.

Typography
Why Mr.Eaves? Well first of all, it's adorable that the spouse to the famous Mrs. Eaves typeface should be a sans-serif. But mostly I wanted something clear and legible, a face with many variants to handle the abundant copy supplied by the client. Also, choosing a face as subtle as Mr. Eaves gave me license to go crazy with the display face, which is Flegrei.
Flegrei is a beautiful geometric display face that reminded me of the patterns of hand-woven Ugandan baskets. Its letterforms are so wide and open that it allowed me to do a knock-out over a pattern, which is usually not a great idea, but in this case evoked a kind of in-knowledge.
Colors
The color palette I chose simply reminded me of Africa. I wanted bright, bold, warm colors that were rich and inviting. The colors were partly inspired by the crested crane, which is something of a national symbol in Uganda.
The dominant color in the design is a warm brown, which was suggested to me by a classmate. It made all the difference in tying together the other elements of the design. This color reads as "coffee" more than the other background colors I had been playing around with.
